Graduate students are automatically considered independent when applying for financial aid.
Much of the financial aid for graduate students is the form of merit-based FELLOWSHIPS AND ASSISTANTSHIPS. Most fellowships are usually awarded by the department although some fellowships awarded by the university or by the federal government. Assistantships are almost always awarded by the department.
